Forstall Japanese Book & Paper Art/
Binding 2-Day Workshop - July 9,10 2011
Participants must register with Forstall Art Supply - class size is limited.
Student will make three projects exploring and re-inventing historically important types of Japanese bindings and traditional cases/boxes. 1. A Tortoise-shell Binding 2. A Yamato Binding. 3. A Variation on the Kansubon Scroll Book. Many variations in these binding styles will also be discussed at length. Correct preparation, use and adhesion of a wide variety of Japanese papers will be shown. Japanese bindings are both stunning and practical, much like their decorative papers.
Doug and Forstall will supply –
Glues, Pastes, all book block, wooden dowels, e6000
Student’s will bring
1 One large piece of kozo or mulberry rice paper PLUS one large piece of chiyogami
2. 1-3 Bone Clasps
3. Pair of (3 dimensional) “knobs” (Students will attach these knobs
to the top of dowels – they should be the size of gumballs or smaller – can be
anythings – balls, buttons, bees, bullets…..)
4. Poem, or quote of your choice
Bring also your bone folder, sewing needles size #1, xacto, ruler, cutting matt, waxed thread, other types of string, and your choice of papers, buttons, images, art supplies (watercolors and inks! Zeroxes and matte medium) or other objects you might want to work with.
