This course will introduce students to the skills and processes involved in the basic design of traditional and non-traditional book formats. Hopefully the course will be a source of inspiration and provide a medium for expression, building upon many traditional bindings and individually created structures suited to each particular student's aesthetic and conceptual preference. Students will acquire technical skill and explore different media as they create a series of their own books. Sequential narratives and imagery will be combined with papermaking, printmaking, photography and bookbinding techniques to produce a series of unique books. Students will explore the history of the book, the book as a physical object, as well as the structure and content of the visual book as a vehicle for creative expression. Conceptual approaches, sequence, design, editions, and experimental books will be discussed. This particular offering of book arts will focus on historical and decorative bindings.
Goals for the student
1. To explore book arts as a vehicle for creative expression and to use the visual book format to develop personal content and imagery.
2. To explore the history of the book in different cultures.
3. To cultivate a strong awareness of both contemporary and traditional book structures, artist books, and the book as a physical object and its significance in our culture throughout the modern era – from dada to now.
4. To develop technical skills in the area of binding, papermaking, and paper arts in general.
5. To develop critical skills and to expand students vocabulary, and their ability to evaluate their own work and that of their peers.
6. To develop self discipline, motivation, and the ability to project their aesthetic and ideas in a creative, unique, and intimate manner.
7. To experiment with new and unique materials and techniques unavailable or unknown to them.

How do you think about the Book?
What do you consider the essence of the book? What images spring to mind when you first reflect upon your subjective interpretation of the book? What symbols can you render that reflect your personal feelings about the book? Outside of how you have been traditionally “taught” how to interpret or handle/view a book what free associations can you make when you think about the book? If you could formulate a way to create, destroy or deconstruct a book - what images would be tumbling down and which images or ideas or the central idea of how you might rebuild it?

Reference, Resource, or Learning materials to be used by Students:
Technical handouts, books (specific books available to this class only), slides, and videos will all be used. I will supply you sites to look at on the web. Please do research on the web - Now! Classes will be comprised of slide lectures, demonstrations, individual and group critiques, class discussions, videos, field trips and active studio participation. YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR A RESEARCH PROJECT IN THIS CLASS!

Week one - Class Introduction- history of Book structure, tools, materials & assemblages, Envelope Project –mail art – book as container, /basic transfer, folding, adhesives – Trip to Forstall - history of paper types
Week two - - Accordion folds, Introduction to Davey Board, Endpapers, Adhesives and Hardcover - Creating Book Cloth, Sewing - Historical Binding (Library Assignment/Research) – Altered Book intro – collage – mixed media
Week three –Altered Book/ – Decorative and Pamphlet Sewing
Week four – Finish Altered Book, Reinvention of Selected Sewing Techniques
Week five – First Research Due, Ledger Flutter books, Paper Craft-
Week six – Scrapbook, Pop-up, Album self-portraits, linear narratives, introduction to advanced sewing & construction
Week seven - Papermaking workshop – Advanced Collage
Week eight – Suminagashi, Marbling, Wabi Printing of Organic and found objects (assemble found art/collages pages for Kangxi) Sewing on Tapes
Week nine – Book Illustrations & Illuminating Devices – metal leaf, calligraphy, and ornamentation, Victorian Album Book Containers
Week ten – Introduction to Japanese or Chinese 4- hole binding methodology – sewing/flat Kangxi, Chinese Style, & Tortoise Shell – assemble example
Week eleven – Boxes and Beyond, Advanced Book Construction, theater book, dos a dos, uneven folds, Venetian, flag, star book etc.
Week twelve – Folio or box with emboss construction & clasp/ The Clamshell box
Week thirteen – Visiting Artist and Project -
Week fourteen, fifteen – Construction of Final Project

Materials list for Introduction to Book Arts

A huge variety of text and cover papers (one found book) Color and BW copies
Probably at least 7-12 sheets of deckle paper-A variety of decorative rice and end papers
4-5 sheets rice paper 22x30 (at least two plain white) Save 2 at least for Flutter book
50-sheet newsprint pad - must have!! - Metal ruler - I like the 90-degree angle kind
Mat knife and xacto knife - cutting board –any dense plastic surface
Micro spatula and spring divider/Compass, Bone folder, Chisel – one side or cold chisel
Davey or binder’s board (Thin or Med), sewing tapes and cords - headbands
Book arts waxed Irish Linen Thread - Book cloth or fabrics to make book cloth
Clean 100% cotton towel & rags - Clean sponge
Wheat paste - PVA Adhesive - 8 oz or more - Paste dish - over 8x8 inches (Plastic tray)
Paste brush – any low natural bristle brush will do – 2 inches wide or wider
Gojo or other hand cleaner -Ziploc Bags and natural wax paper
Masking tape - Wide clear tape (packing), Water mister
Good! Scissors, Small Book Art Awl, bone clasps
Sewing needles - #1 + Embroidery Needles or Upholstery Needle
